Providence College won't be Lou Lamoriello's most avid Hockey East fan this season for the first time since he helped found the conference.
Well, admittedly, it may not be that easy to lure the Islanders general manager away from his alma mater, but Islanders fans who haven't had a good reason to watch college hockey in quite some time should take a look at Boston College, where rookie winger Cole Yzerman and rookie center Kamil Bednarik went 20th and 61st overall in last week's draft.
It's also no coincidence that BU coach Jay Pandolfo and Lamoriello are longtime pals — Pandolfo played most of his NHL career with the Devils and won two Stanley Cups while Lamoriello led the front office — and on the draft floor, Lamoriello repeatedly mentioned Pandolfo's ability to develop talent.
“We’ve kept in contact ever since I stopped playing,” Pandolfo told Sports+ by phone this week. “I wouldn’t say we talk on a regular basis, but certainly whenever we ran into each other, especially when I went back to Boston, I was coaching there so I just talked to him a little bit about that. [with the Bruins]I was asking him if he thought it was a good decision. [to go to BU].
