On Saturday, the Texas Tech football program concluded the 2024 spring session with another scrimmage. After practice, head coach Joey McGuire spoke to the media about the scrimmage and his thoughts on the end of the spring.
“I'm really happy with the way the players played,” he said. “I thought we had some big plays early with our playmakers, the guys we needed to make plays. And I thought the defense was consistently sprinting to the football.” Masu.
“…I think this defense is going to be kind of an unknown defense. And that doesn't mean we don't have some big guys that are going to make a name for themselves, it's just the depth.” I'm really happy that I was able to finish it in such a healthy way. ”
Like any football program, the focus has always been on the quarterback at Texas Tech, and with starting QB Behren Morton missing practice to heal from a sprain in his throwing shoulder, McGuire has seen more from his backup passer. talked about. Interestingly, he had high praise for true freshman Will Hammond.
“They did a really good job,” he said. “I thought Will was really spot on early in the game. I could be wrong and I’ll have to go back and look at it, but if you count the interceptions, I think he was on point in the first half. You never know when the ball hits the ground…I thought he played really well.”
McGuire was then asked about the depth chart behind Morton. Not surprisingly, he said West Georgia transfer Cam Brown has the inside track in the QB2 role.
“There is no doubt that I know Behlen. [Morton] is number one,” he said. “I think the guy that comes in after that is going to be Cam Brown.Again, you don’t want to play freshmen or you only want to play freshmen in these four games of his. [to preserve the ability to redshirt] So I think we know that if we play tomorrow it will be Behren and Cam. ”
One of the things that worked in Brown's favor was his ability to use his legs. According to McGuire, the two-way quarterback could bring even more value to the offense.
“And I say Cam because we've actually been working on a few different things,” he said, “I mean, I hate to say it because this is a nightmare for me. , I think you realize a lot K-State, the package they did whenever they really did in the game against us. [Avery Johnson’s] First extra play, freshman quarterback. I think whenever Cam is in the game, he's going to see a lot of that style of football, and if he has to be in the game, he's going to see a lot of that style of football. . So those two guys were the guys I was looking for.'' I'm going to go with one or two. ”
Mr. McGuire provided an update on Mr. Morton's health. He sprained his shoulder in Game 4 against West Virginia last fall, but then played through that injury and played all season. As a precaution, he missed the final two weeks of spring football to rest his injury. McGuire says it was a good decision.
“I feel really good,” he said. “He'll say, “You can go play today.'' I would probably say it the second time or after.'' After the third day of rest, he would say the pain was gone. ”
As for which young players have stepped up in the spring, McGuire cited several defensive standouts. He specifically praised the players he turned heads at the Independence Bowl.
“You know, we saw him in the bowl game, you could say Amir Washington, he’s like a bull in the Chinese closet,” he said. “…So I’m really excited for him. I thought…[defensive back] Jaron Peoples had a really good spring. He's really starting to grow.
“They’re the ones I’m really excited about, as they’ve come along. [defenisve tackle] Jayden Coffield and he had a great spring game and he's really stepped up. [Defenisve tackle] Braylon Rigsby and the spacing on the defensive line really came into play. And Sheridan Wilson had a really good spring. The great thing about him is I know he does a great job at center and we have a group of four or five guys who can play guard and center that we're very excited about. Thing. ”
Overall, this should have been considered a successful spring for Texas Tech. There were no major injuries to players, and the team was able to give key roles to a group of promising players who will be asked to contribute this fall. Now, we've come a long way, getting through the offseason and dog days of summer and waiting for college football to resume.
