In May 2024, the number of new tech job openings nationwide reached 209,000, up nearly 27,000 from April. This is the highest number since June 2023, according to CompTIA's “Tech Jobs Report.” Last month, there were a total of approximately 427,000 tech job openings nationwide. The number of job openings for AI jobs or jobs requiring AI skills continues to grow steadily, totaling more than 26,000, accounting for 12% of all tech job openings.
The unemployment rate for tech-related occupations fell to 2.5%, well below the national average of 4%. The number of tech jobs across the economy fell by 42,000, less than 1% of the total tech employment of approximately 6.4 million people.
“The surge in tech job postings is an encouraging sign that more employers are coming off the sidelines,” said Tim Herbert, chief research officer at CompTIA. “This may reflect the growing demand for tech talent that companies need to support their digital growth initiatives.”
Several technology roles saw double-digit increases in job postings in May, including data scientist (+24%), database administrator (+18%), software developer (+17%), web developer (15%), network architect (12%) and technical support specialist (+10%).
A new report from CompTIA shows that 45% of tech job openings available as of May 2024 don't require applicants to have a four-year college degree, indicating employers are broadening their tech talent pool. For some key tech roles, the percentages are even higher, including network support specialist (86%), IT support specialist (72%), network and systems administrator (54%) and programmer (50%).
