college hockey
The Michigan Technological University hockey team advanced to the NCAA Tournament after defeating Bemidji State University 2-1 in the Central University Hockey Association tournament finals on Friday night. The Beavers took an early lead with Kasper Magnussen scoring 14 minutes into the first period. Chase Pietila tied it 52 seconds later with assists from Alex Nordstrom and Henry Bartle. Ryland Moseley's goal midway through the second period was the winning goal. Matthew Campbell had the assist. Blake Pietila made 35 saves as the Huskies won their first Mason Cup and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. Tournament brackets will be announced tomorrow and regional competitions will be held next weekend.

Only one Upper Peninsula team remains in the high school girls basketball tournament. On Friday, Negaunee lost to Detroit Edison 63-46 in the Division 2 semifinals. Ella Mason, the Miners' all-time leading scorer this season, led Negaunee with 25 points. The Miners finished the season with 25 wins and 2 losses.
The brackets for today's championship match at the Breslin Center in East Lansing have been determined:
• In Division 4, Ishpeming will play Kingston this morning at 10:00. The record for both teams is 27 wins and 1 loss. Listen to the broadcast on KBear 102.3.
• In Division 3, Niles Brandywine and Ypsilanti Arbor Prep will play at 4:00.

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Calumet Wolverines 6-5 in a shootout last night.
The Wolverines will host the De Pere Deacons tonight at the Coliseum starting at 6 p.m. Tomorrow, the Pioneers will host the Deacons at 1 p.m.

NBA
Last night, the Pistons lost to the Celtics 129-102. James Wiseman led Detroit with 24 points.
The Pistons will play the Pelicans tomorrow, with coverage starting at 2:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
Once again, a Detroit player has been ruled out for the remainder of the season. Stanley Umude suffered a hairline fracture in his right ankle in Wednesday's loss to the Pacers. Author Thompson and Isaiah Stewart are also out, and Simone Fontequo, Quinten Grimes and Taj Gibson are also on Detroit's injured list.
MLB Spring Training
Yesterday the Tigers defeated the Phillies 4-3. Tariq Skubal gave up three hits and one run in five innings in his final preseason start. All of Detroit's runs came in the ninth inning, with home runs by Jake Rogers and Ryan Vilade, and a double by Gio Urshela.
The Tigers will play the Yankees today. Brant Huerter will be the starter.
Detroit manager AJ Hinch announced his pitching rotation for the start of the season. Skubal will start on opening day, followed by Kenta Maeda, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize and Reece Olson. The strange man is Matt Manning, who was assigned to Toledo. Mize returned after a two-year absence after undergoing Tommy John ligament replacement surgery and back surgery.
Yesterday, half of the Brewers played in a 4-4 tie with the Mariners. Vinny Capra hit a home run. Freddy Peralta pitched five innings, allowing five hits and three runs, with nine strikeouts. The Brewers' other half defeated the Royals 11-5. Garrett Mitchell and prospect Brock Wilken hit home runs.
The Brewers will play a cup game today. Wade Miley will start.
