college hockey
The Michigan Technological University hockey team faced a tough opponent in the opening game of the NCAA Hockey Tournament. The Huskies will play top-ranked Boston College on Friday at 2 p.m. The match will be held in Providence, Rhode Island. Tech defeated Bemidji State in the conference tournament Friday night to earn the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's automatic bid and become the only CCHA team selected. The Huskies' record is 19 wins, 14 losses, and 6 draws. The Eagles won the Hockey East regular season and tournament championships and have a record of 31-5-1. The University of Wisconsin and Quinnipiac will meet in the other regional semifinal.
Three other Michigan teams earned invitations. Michigan State is the No. 4 seed and will play Western Michigan in the opening game. The University of Michigan will play the University of North Dakota. Both games will be played in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

The Ishpeming High School girls basketball team won its first state title Saturday with a decisive 73-54 victory over Kingston. Hematite trailed early, trailing 22-11 at the end of the first quarter. However, they recovered in the second quarter and entered halftime with a one-point lead. In the second half, sophomore Jenessa Eagle ignited a breakthrough for Ishpeming, scoring 15 of her 27 points in the third quarter. Jenna Maki, the school's all-time leading scorer, added 25 points in her final game. It is UP's first women's basketball title since 2015, when Calumet and St. Ignace won.

• Detroit Edison shut out Father Gabriel Richard of Ann Arbor, 41-33, in Division II.
• West Bloomfield defeated Grand Blanc 60-30 in Division 1 play.

Paul Stouros' hat trick led the Calumet Wolverines to an 8-2 victory over the De Pere Deacons on Saturday night.
Yesterday, the Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Deacons 10-1. The Pioneers finished their Great Lakes Hockey League campaign as conference champions. They will be the top seed for the championship tournament, which begins April 5 in Fond du Lac.

The Red Wings will visit the Capitals tomorrow. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Rift.
NBA
Yesterday, the Pistons lost to the Pelicans 114-101. Chimezie Metu led Detroit with his 17 points. Metu was signed to a 10-day contract last week due to Detroit's injury rash.
The Pistons visit the Knicks tonight with coverage starting at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB Spring Training
The Tigers defeated the Rays 3-2 yesterday. Jack Flaherty pitched five innings, allowing five hits and two runs, with eight strikeouts. Gio Urshela hit a double home run for Detroit.
The Tigers conclude their Grapefruit League campaign tomorrow against the Rays again. Casey Mize will start.
Yesterday, the Brewers defeated the Diamondbacks 14-4. Willie Adames hit three home runs. Sal Frelick, Reece Hoskins and Luis Lara also hit home runs. DL Hall started and allowed 5 hits and 2 runs in 5 innings.
The Brewers play the Rockies today. Colin Rea will start.
Milwaukee starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff has confirmed he will not pitch this summer. Woodruff was expected to miss at least the majority of the season as he recovers from major shoulder surgery. He wants to be ready for the 2025 season.
The Brewers will also begin the season without starter Wade Miley, who is on injured reserve with a groin strain. He hopes to be back by mid-April.
