San Antonio – This is a developing story, check back for updates.
Iris co-founder and CEO Beto Altamirano released a video Friday morning announcing his candidacy for San Antonio mayor in 2025.
“I am running for mayor because 'Our Story' is San Antonio's next chapter. Our city has always been defined by its rich traditions and the people who call it home. This journey is not just for us alone — it's for all of us. Together, we can build the future of this great city,” Altamirano said in an accompanying news release.
The video announcement came ahead of a campaign launch event Saturday morning at the Friendly Spot Icehouse.
Mayor Ron Nirenberg's fourth, two-year term ends in 2025, leaving the mayoral seat open for the first time since Phil Hardberger retired in 2009, when there was a two-term limit.
Altamirano is the first candidate to announce his candidacy outside of City Hall; only two others, Councilman Manny Pelaez (D-District 8) and Councilman John Courage (D-District 9), have publicly announced their candidacy.
Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Huberda (D-6th) has also told KSAT she intends to run, and Councilwoman Adriana Rocha Garcia (D-4th) is also considering running, but neither have officially launched their campaigns.
Former Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos on Thursday appeared to soft-launch his campaign by forming a new “nonpartisan public policy research group” focused on the 2025 mayoral election.
