As the 2024 Paris Olympics approaches, Team USA boxing is poised to make a historic impact. With eight talented fighters ready to step into the ring, the team is determined to end their gold medal drought and make their mark in Olympic history.
For the upcoming Paris Olympics, the United States has fielded an impressive team of eight boxers, four men and four women, who have demonstrated exceptional skill and tenacity to earn their place representing the United States on one of the biggest stages in sports.
of Men's team
Leading the men's group is Roscoe Hilla veteran athlete from Spring, Texas. Competing in the flyweight (51 kg) class, Hill is the most experienced athlete on the team. His leadership and expertise make him a favorite to win the gold medal as the men's team seeks its first Olympic title since Andre Ward's win in 2004.
Another standout in the lineup is Jamal Harvey Harvey, a native of Oxon Hill, Maryland, will compete in the featherweight (57 kg) division. Known for his excellent technical ability and strategic thinking, Harvey became the first American man to win an elite world title since 2007. His impressive performances, which included a gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, have secured him a spot in the Olympic Games.
The representative for the middleweight (71 kg) Omari Jones Jones, a native of Orlando, Florida, has been outstanding over the past year, consistently winning medals in a variety of events and proving to be one of the team's most reliable fighters.
In the super heavyweight division (over 92 kg), Joshua Edwards Jones, a native of Houston, Texas, joins the boys' team to complete the roster. Both Jones and Edwards have demonstrated great talent and tenacity, each winning multiple awards during the 2023 season.
Women's Team
The women's lineup is equally strong, featuring trailblazing athletes who have already made history. Jennifer Lozano A native of Laredo, Texas, Lozano competes in the flyweight (50 kg) class and is set to win a silver medal at the 2023 Pan American Games, becoming the first Olympian from the city.
The representative for the featherweight (57kg) Alyssa Mendoza Hailing from Caldwell, Idaho, Mendoza is the youngest member of the team at just 20 years old and the first Olympic boxer from Idaho, having enjoyed a stellar debut year in international competition, winning medals in three major events.
Cleveland's own Morrell McCain Moving up to the welterweight division (66 kg), she has already made history as the first female boxer from Cleveland to qualify for the Olympic Games. McCain has proven her ability and determination by winning one gold medal and two silver medals at international competitions in 2023.
Completing the women's line-up are Jajaira Gonzalez Gonzalez, from Glendora, California, competes in the lightweight (60 kg) weight class. Gonzalez earned an Olympic berth by winning a bronze medal at the 2023 Pan American Games.
Pursuing Olympic success
The last Olympic gold medal for the team in boxing was won by Claressa Shields in 2016, and the last gold medal for the men's team was won by Andre Ward in 2004. The upcoming Olympics will be a great opportunity for the USA Boxing Team to add to their illustrious Olympic tradition of 117 medals, including 50 gold medals.
The road to the gold medal begins on Thursday, July 25, with the draw for the tournament, which will determine a champion in a single-elimination format.
As Team USA boxers prepare to perform on the world stage, all eyes will be on Paris in the hopes of them achieving great things and bringing glory home to their country.
