Days after the start of Olympic training camp in North Carolina, USA Swimming announced the four team captains for Paris. Ryan Murphy, Katie Ledecky, Nick Fink and Abby Weitzil have been selected as swimming team captains for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Ledecky and Weitzil will lead the women's team, while Murphy and Fink will lead the men's team. The four swimmers are the oldest swimmers joining the U.S. team in Paris.
The four team captains for the Paris Olympics
Katie Ledecky, one of the standout athletes at the 2024 U.S. Trials, has been named team captain for the first time. She will compete in the Paris Olympics and become the eighth U.S. swimmer to compete in four Olympic Games. At the 2024 Trials, Ledecky qualified to compete in four events: the 200m freestyle, 800m freestyle, 400m freestyle, and 1500m freestyle. However, she will likely opt out of the 200m freestyle and focus on the freestyle relay.
Ryan Murphy, who served as team captain for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, will be competing in his third Olympic Games. I previously wrote about Murphy's consistent performance since the Tokyo Olympics. The swimmer has maintained his momentum over the past three years after winning two medals (silver and bronze) at the 2021 Olympics. Murphy placed first in the finals of both the 100m and 200m backstroke events at the 2024 Trials and is looking forward to defending his medals.
Weitzeil has qualified for the Paris Games as a relay athlete in the 400-meter freestyle. In the past two Olympic Games, he helped the U.S. team win gold and silver medals in the 4×100-meter medley at the Rio and Tokyo Olympics, respectively. The 27-year-old Weitzeil also won a bronze medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay in Tokyo. Weitzeil has also qualified for the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle at the past two Trials.
Nick Fink qualified in the 100-meter breaststroke, becoming the oldest member of the U.S. Olympic team for 2024. The 31-year-old swimmer is a staple on the team in the breaststroke events and has won multiple medals at the Long Distance World Championships in the 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke. Paris will be Fink's second Olympic Games, who is yet to win an Olympic medal.
Murphy, Fink and Weizeil have also been selected as team captains for the 2023 Long Course World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
