As the soccer season comes to a close, Lexington County teams will be looking to finish in good shape for the playoffs, which begin next week.
There is still a lot at stake in the final week of the season, with several regional championships still to be won. Teams compete for playoff seeding based on their performance in the region.
Chapin's boys and girls teams will aim to win the 5A Region 4 title, but it all comes down to this week. The Eagles and River Bluff boys teams were scheduled to play a potentially position-shaking game on April 23, after the Chronicle's reporting deadline.
The Eagles will conclude their season on April 26th at home against Dutch Fork. A win over River Bluff would clinch a spot in the region, while a win at both would guarantee an undefeated regional season and a top seed in the playoffs.
The women's title race is even closer than the men's, with two teams in Chapin's footsteps. Lexington and River Bluff have one more region loss than the Eagles, so if Chapin fails this week, the team could lose the title.
Lexington needs to beat Dutch Fork to stay in contention for the championship, and hopes River Bluff can beat Chapin. If that happens and River Bluff defeats White Knoll on April 25th, there will be a three-way race for first place.
There was some movement in the 3A Region 5 boys standings after last week's matchup between Swansea and Brookland Casey.
The Bearcats defeated the Tigers 3-1 on April 19, moving Swansea up in the standings. The Bearcats are 8-2 in district play this week, while Swansea opens at 7-2.
fight for The final week of the girls title is a two-team competition, and Gilbert continues to maintain the top spot from last week.
The Indians are 9-1, half a game ahead of Dreher, who is 8-1. The two sides are scheduled to meet this week on April 25th in a match that could decide who wins the region. In their last matchup, Dreher defeated Gilbert 4-1.
The other teams in Lexington County may not win their division, but they are competing near the top and should be good enough to earn a playoff spot.
The Irmo boys sit in second place in the region behind undefeated AC Flora. Both of Irmo's conference losses were against AC Flora.
The Airport girls are in third place behind South Aiken and North Augusta and could move up or down depending on how last week unfolds. The Eagles had one more regional game scheduled for April 25 against Aiken.
Batesburg-Leedsville is tied for first place in the region with Strom Thurmond with 5 wins and 1 loss. The Panthers conclude the regular season with a road game against Newberry this week.
Both Gray College teams will face a final test before advancing to the playoffs. The War Eagles finalized their region before the season began due to a forfeit.
The first round of the playoffs will take place on April 29th and 30th, with the winning teams having two days of rest before the second round begins.
The championship games will be played May 10th and 11th at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.

Ismael Martinez Swansea had three goals and one assist in their win over Horse Creek.
