July 17, 2024, Taipei, Taiwan–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Taiwan has announced its delegation to the Paris Olympic Games, which opens on July 26. The team is made up of 60 athletes, 39 coaches and 23 first-timers, and will represent Taiwan in 16 sports events. The athletes will depart for Paris on July 17, with the archery team being the first to arrive.
Among the notable players representing Taiwan are badminton women's singles world number three Tai Tzu-ying, who will be making her final attempt at an Olympic gold medal; women's doubles world number two Hsieh Su-wei, who will partner with Tso Chia-yi to represent Taiwan; and weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun, world record holder in the women's 59kg snatch, clean and jerk and combined.
On the men's side, table tennis player Chuang Chih-yuan will compete in his sixth Olympic Games, setting a new record for the most appearances by a Taiwanese athlete, while Tang Chia-hung will once again compete on the horizontal bar, and Yang Yong-wei, Taiwan's first Olympic medallist in judo, will return to defend his title.
In addition, breakdancing will debut as an official Olympic sport at the 2024 Paris Games, with 16 of the world's top athletes competing. Taiwanese breakdancer Sun Chen, who started breakdancing at the age of 11, qualified to compete in the games, marking a historic moment for Taiwanese street dance.
To foster friendship among the athletes and promote sports diplomacy, glass cups, pendants and scented cards depicting Taiwan's blue magpies will be distributed to other athletes to showcase Taiwan's cultural identity.
