Hockey fans around the world have their own stories about what made them fall in love with the sport. Whether they're Michigan residents who remember the heyday of the Detroit Red Wings or current Las Vegas kids with the Vegas Golden Knights, hockey fans will reminisce about the times they spent at games with their dads. These are memories to cherish on Father's Day, honoring the parents who taught them valuable life lessons.
Of course, that was a challenge for many of us, including myself, who have attended numerous sporting events with my father throughout our lives, including UNLV football games at Sam Boyd Stadium and Red Wings games at Joe Louis Arena, both of which have storied histories.
So this chapter of “Sunday Thoughts” is dedicated to the story of how I fell in love with the sport — from playing hockey video games with my dad to going to Joe Louis Arena to watch dynasty teams — and here's what's on my mind and what Vegas Golden Knights fans should think about as they head into the work week.
Growing up in Michigan, my family and I were huge Detroit Red Wings fans, which made sense considering they were an NHL powerhouse long before the Vegas Golden Knights were even conceived. My cousin Ty was Detroit's “main man” all season, leading the team to a playoff appearance.
Of course, living in the Midwest, sports is king. Especially when a team is dominating the league, sports take precedence over everything else. Whether it's watching a Tigers game on Father's Day or going to a restaurant, sports take center stage. Mike Ilitch made sure that happened with the Red Wings, stocking his team with future NHL Hall of Famers.
My sister and I would often go to Joe Louis Arena with my dad, and one memorable experience was a game against the Calgary Flames in 1997. That was the game that introduced me to the beauty of hockey. I saw the players move at high speed, take big hits and make great passes.
Of course, there were also video games that my father bought me. NHL 99 Nintendo 64 and NHL Hits 20-03 These games were for the Nintendo GameCube. These games furthered my love for hockey (especially The Simpsons upon NHL Hits 20-03). With a great soundtrack and smooth gameplay, I was hooked.
Now that love has been spread to the Vegas Golden Knights, where I witnessed an explosive Stanley Cup victory party. A love of hockey has led to new opportunities and lasting friendships. And now it's led to creative outlets where fans can stay informed and entertained.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without my dad. He introduced me to one of the greatest sports of all time. Hockey, especially the NHL, has become a part of my life. With an up and coming community that continues to grow every day, I wouldn't have it any other way. On Father's Day, this is my message to you Dad.
