If the St. Thomas More girls soccer team is going to succeed in its goal of repeating as Division II state champions, the Cougars know they need some players to step up and play well. Ta.
Among those players was junior Aubrey Cassidy, who Cougars coach Daniel Underwood believed was essential to STM's success.
“We knew Aubrey was going to be the centerpiece of our team,” Underwood said. “She didn't know how she would handle it. But she handled it well in the end.”
Cassidy had a team-high 34 goals and eight assists, leading the Cougars to a 29-1-1 record and the Division II state championship. This state title was the Cougars' seventh consecutive state title.
“Aubrey got stronger as the season went on,” Underwood said. “She's a small forward, and opposing teams try to put their bodies on her, but it's a disadvantage for the other team because she gets better when they do that.” She's quick and cunning. She played a key role in helping us maintain this advantage.”
For her efforts, Cassidy was named the Acadiana Advocate All-Metro Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
“Aubrey is a great fit,” Underwood said. “She is extremely talented and a team player. This is well-deserved, and the (Acadiana) Advocates could not have chosen a better representative for this award.”
