The Warriors were successful in acquiring Buddy Hield despite interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, but who was the spearhead for Golden State's successful pursuit of the hard-shooting guard?
Warriors coach Steve Kerr and assistant Chris DeMarco successfully persuaded Hield to join the Warriors, The Athletic's Anthony Slater reported Wednesday.
DeMarco, who coaches Hield's Bahamas national team, convinced the eighth-year veteran to join Golden State while the NBA was in Spain for Olympic qualifying.
While DeMarco tried hard to convince Hield to choose the Warriors, Slater's report said he spoke with Kerr on the phone late Wednesday night and gave it some thought before making his decision on Thursday.
The Warriors' reported acquisition of Hield comes on the heels of signing veteran forward Kyle Anderson and two-way guard De'Anthony Melton, reflecting a strong bounce back following the departure of franchise mainstay Klay Thompson.
DeMarco has been with the Warriors organization since 2012 and was promoted from video coordinator to his current role as assistant coach.
DeMarco has helped build a dynasty with his behind-the-scenes contributions, but his efforts to acquire Hield will not go unnoticed, especially if the shooter plays a role in returning Golden State to NBA prominence.
