ST. LOUIS — Competition is heating up at the Gateway Region YMCA.
The YMCA offers youth sports leagues and clinics throughout the region.
The young soccer stars at the South City Y are ready to go head-to-head with Mary, Malik and me in a Show Me Game.
We even had a professional player come and join us! Jake Nerwinski, a defender from St. Louis City SC, joined us for practice!
“I started playing soccer when I was four years old and I've loved it ever since. Soccer is not just a sport, it teaches you so many life lessons that I still carry with me as an adult. Soccer teaches you interpersonal skills, communication, teamwork, all those things that are so important,” Nerwinski said.
CITY SC and the Gateway Region YMCA share a common goal: to bring soccer to the community.
“We have three soccer sessions here at the YMCA – one in the spring and two in the fall. Our partnership with City SC allows us to offer the program at a reduced cost to the kids who participate – it's only a $5 fee for members and $10 for non-members,” said Andy Bohannan, district athletic director for the South City and Carondelet YMCA.
The soccer club has provided new equipment and implemented a new soccer curriculum at the YMCA to improve the level of training and play.
YMCA sports and recreation creates a healthy space for kids to master new skills, learn to work as a team and connect with positive role models.

Tune in live from the Plaza at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 25th to celebrate the Show Me Games competition finals and find out who takes home the gold medal.
