After negotiating a contract extension, the Sacramento Kings and head coach Mike Brown remain at odds over a potential deal and have shelved the talks, sources told ESPN on Friday.
Brown has one guaranteed season remaining on his original four-year contract and is hopeful a deal can be worked out that will avoid him playing out the final year of his contract in 2024-25, the person said.
Brown led the Kings back to the Western Conference playoffs for the first time in 18 years in the 2022-23 season and won the NBA Coach of the Year award. Sacramento finished 48-34 last year as the third seed in the Western Conference, but ended up losing their opening seven-game series to the Golden State Warriors.
The Kings were the ninth seed this season and beat the Warriors in the play-in tournament before losing to the New Orleans Pelicans. Under Brown, the Kings have a 94-70 (.573) record in two seasons.
Brown has been named NBA Coach of the Year twice, once with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009. Brown was the head coach of the Cavaliers twice (305-187, 62% win percentage) and spent one more season as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers (42-29, 592% win percentage).
