Boston Celtics guard Derrick White has agreed to a four-year, $125.9 million contract extension, which includes a player option, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski has heard from sources familiar with the matter.
Boston acquired the versatile guard, White, who turns 30 on Tuesday, at the 2022 trade deadline by dealing a first-round pick and a future first-round swap to the San Antonio Spurs. White went on to lead the Celtics to the 2022 NBA Finals, where they lost in six games to the Golden State Warriors.
After playing primarily as a sixth man late in his first half season with the Celtics and in the playoffs, White has broken into the starting lineup each of the past two seasons and been named to the All-Defensive Second Team each year, establishing himself as one of the league's best two-way guards.
White's reputation is due in large part to his improved stats as a shooter over the past two seasons, shooting 38.1% and 39.6% from 3-point range during the regular season, respectively, and shooting over 40% in each of Boston's past two playoff games. He averaged 13.8 points, 48 rebounds and 39.5% from long range in the Finals as the Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks, 4-1, to win their franchise-record 18th NBA title.
By signing White to a contract extension, the Celtics will be looking to secure all of their key players on long-term deals and remain the defending league champions for the time being.
