LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Riley Dubner Crane of Sierra Vista High School struggles both on the soccer field and in her schoolwork.
She is a standout athlete and a member of the student government on campus.
Soccer is a sport that requires a lot of physical and mental toughness, and Dubner-Crane said the game taught her more than just knowing how to kick a ball.
“There was a lot of communication,” she told me. “Even when things are bad and you don't want to communicate it, you still have conflict. You still have to let it out to resolve everything.”
Dubner-Crane said her work ethic didn't come out of nowhere. She said it was her parents who let her be who she is and raised her to do her best in everything she does. If anyone at school noticed that, it was her coach, Ryan Quinn.
“What's really important is being a good person, making good choices, and what's going to be best for you in the future. What choices can you make today and in five years' time? Look back and say, 'I don't want to be a good person.' I did the right thing, and I can say, 'Am I in a better position because of that?' She definitely does that every day,'' Quinn said. “She's very well-deserved. She's just a very dedicated student-athlete. She always comes to practice and works hard, and she does the same in the classroom. She's a very hard worker and keeps her grades at the top. “She has never had a problem with her,” and she is a role model for the other girls in the program. ”
Dubner Crane said she wants to be a role model for other kids looking to succeed in high school and said it's all about how hard you work.
“I have to practice when I have homework, and I can't just go home, take a shower, and go to bed,'' she told me. “You have to do your schoolwork and stay on top of everything.”
