Shane Mosley Jr. is, of course, the son of the great “Sugar” Shane, and he's proof that an undefeated record is nothing in this sport. Though Mosley Jr. has lost four fights, he feels he has learned from each one, and last night the 33-year-old faced the biggest test of his career, defeating “Miracle Man” Daniel Jacobs by a 10-round majority decision. Currently 22-4 (12) and never having been stopped in a fight, Mosley Jr. has won five straight fights since losing a majority decision to Jason Quigley in May 2021.
Mosley Jr. displayed some excellent tactical boxing in last night's super middleweight bout, winning by one-sided scores of 100-90, 99-91, 99-91. Jacobs, 37, is back after a lengthy break and looking for “one last shot”, but his future is unclear as he now has a record of 37-5 (30).
Meanwhile, Mosley Jr. has named WBA middleweight titleholder Erislandy Lara as his next target, saying he wants to challenge the Cuban boxer.
“I want Erislandy Lara,” a victorious Mosley said. “If you're listening, I want you. Let's go, baby.”
Last night's win meant a lot to Mosley, but it wasn't exactly thrilling, with a restless crowd at times. But Mosley got the job done and won in an undoubtedly dominant fashion. Can Mosley Jr. follow in his father's footsteps and become a world champion? With early career setbacks against March Christopher Adkins (split decision loss), David Toussaint (also split decision loss), Brandon Adams (UD loss) and Quigley all now in the past, Shane Mosley Jr. has high hopes for the future.
Who would win if Lara answered Mosley's call, and how? At 41 years old, Lara is still effective and skilled, boasting a record of 30 wins, 3 losses and 3 draws (18) and has shared the ring with some of the sport's elite, including Canelo Alvarez, Austin Trout, Vanes Martirosyan and Paul “The Punisher” Williams. So, regardless of age, the southpaw Lara would likely have the advantage in a bout with Mosley.
Lara last boxed in March when he handily defeated Michael Zerafa in Las Vegas, marking the Cuban's first fight in nearly two years.
