Lawmakers are calling on NIST to counter Chinese influence over new technology standards.
Sens. Mark Warner of Virginia and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee introduce the Advancing American Leadership in Standards Act of 2024, which aims to increase U.S. participation in international standards bodies for emerging technologies. did. The bill includes a pilot program to fund standard-setting conferences at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
“In recent years, the Chinese Communist Party has asserted its dominance in global technology, and as the Chinese Communist Party has grown in stature, our authority and influence have declined,” said Senator Warner. “This legislation clearly outlines the steps we must take to reestablish our leadership and ensure we do everything in our power to establish global standards for critical and emerging technologies. .”
The law also requires NIST to create a web portal to facilitate stakeholder involvement in international standardization efforts.
