Hollywood actor Terry Crews is set to step into the boxing ring to take on one of the best fighters in UFC history.
The muscular former NFL star has one of the most famous physiques in the world, but his combat experience is limited. However, it looks like he will appear in the boxing ring for the first time as part of a major boxing event to be held in Brazil on June 15th.
Crews is best known for his roles in hit films and television shows such as Brooklyn 99 and White Chicks. Although he has never competed in a ring or cage, he has trained in the past and developed his physique as a result of having to fight on the streets in his youth.
Terry Crews announces boxing debut against UFC legend Anderson Silva
Earlier this week, former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva appeared to hint at a final fight in his native Brazil. He shared a teaser video for an event called Spaten Fight Night, teasing his unlikely opponent.
The announcement video was captioned in Portuguese: “It's time for the grand finale of Spider-Man in Brazil.” And the farewell to the martial arts legend of his country had to take place on a special occasion.
“Late Fight Night. Spaten's new fighting platform. June 15th in São Paulo and you'll see it live in the Globe. Can you guess who your opponent is? Let us know in the comments.”
Hours later, Mr. Cruz shared his own post, seeming to acknowledge that he was an opponent. In the video he says: “Okay, Anderson Silva, I've been training all this time, I'm ready.
“See you on June 15th, Fight Night in Brazil. June 15th, let's go, Anderson Silva. Me, you, let's make it happen. What? Terry Crews is here, Brazil !”
Silva's response was simple, writing in the comments section of the viral post: “See you on June 15th.”
Anderson Silva to retire after legendary career
The event appears to be touted as Silva's final one after decades as one of the greatest athletes of all time. “The Spider” was once considered the greatest fighter on the planet at the height of his record-setting run in the UFC.
He ended up losing quite a bit in his last match inside the Octagon. But until the end, he remained competitive with the best players in the world, even after coming back from a bad broken bone in a rematch with Chris Weidman.
Silva then turned to boxing and defeated former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in Mexico in one of the greatest crossover performances ever by a mixed martial artist in the ring. He quickly moved on to former UFC champion Tito Ortiz, dispatching him briefly to set up a match with Jake Paul.
Silva boxed well in the early rounds against Paul in October 2022, but was unable to win on the scorecards enough to overcome a knockdown from the YouTuber in the final stages. He did not state his future after the fact, but he has not fought since.
