The top mixed martial arts organization will host UFC 306 at the Sphere on September 14th, with Sean O'Malley's bantamweight championship set to be decided.
The organization will hold its second Mexican Independence Day celebration on September 14. The event will again take place in Las Vegas, but the Octagon will be a completely different environment this time around.
The 2024 Noche UFC will take place at the unique Sphere venue rather than the T-Mobile Arena for the second consecutive year, and ahead of it, UFC CEO Dana White has promised a spectacle never seen before.
White then confirmed this week that O'Malley will be tasked with closing out the defence of the belt against Merab Dvalishvili. White announced the expected news in a video uploaded to UFC's social media accounts on Friday night.
O'Malley aims to make a successful second defence at the expense of Dvalishvili
When the two meet in the Octagon in the unique environment of the Sphere, O'Malley will be looking to make Dvalishvili the second victim of his title reign.
O'Malley (18-1, 1 no-hitter) captured the 135-pound gold in impressive fashion with a shocking second-round knockout over longtime champion Aljamain Sterling at the UFC 292 pay-per-view event in Boston last August, ending “The Funk Master's” record-breaking reign and creating an opportunity for his teammate to exact revenge.
While we had to wait for “Sugar” to settle his unfinished score with Marlon Vera at UFC 299 in Miami in March of this year, Dvalishvili (17-4) is finally set to get his first shot at a mixed martial arts title.
To achieve this, the Georgia boxer needed to win 10 straight bouts and remain undefeated since 2018. He recently defeated three former champions, Jose Aldo, Petr Yan and Henry Cejudo, leaving no room for doubt as the undisputed number one contender in the bantamweight division.
