UFC bantamweight champion Sean O'Malley continues to show interest in boxing, and this time he's targeting Floyd Mayweather.
O'Malley is fresh off an incredible performance against Marlon Vera, dominating the entire 25-minute fight. After successfully winning his first title, “Suga” became a bigger name than ever, and if he continues on this path, the matches he could be a part of will only get bigger.
However, O'Malley doesn't seem too keen on setting a record for title defenses, mentioning featherweight champion Ilya Topria's name in his post-fight speech. O'Malley also continued to call out high-level boxers on his podcast and in media appearances, claiming he could defeat someone like Ryan Garcia if the two met.
The 29-year-old spoke on The MMA Hour about Garcia, who mentioned the idea of transitioning to MMA. Garcia has been posting strange videos and messages on social media over the past few weeks, but it's unclear what's really going on.
“Again, I don't think he's where he should be mentally,” Sean O'Malley began. “We'll see how he does against Devin Haney and move on from there. MMA fights are so unrealistic that there's a zero percent chance he'll be in that fight. I think it would take one MMA session, one day of wrestling, one day of jiu-jitsu with someone who knows something for him to realize this is a bad idea.”
Sean O'Malley drops Floyd Mayweather's name
So O'Malley would pitch the idea of boxing Mayweather, who had been in regular exhibition contests until last June.
“If something happens, it's going to be boxing. I mean, given where his head is right now, I don't even know if he wants to build up in a match like that,” O'Malley continued. “Because it's going to be a big one. It might not be, but there's still a big fight left. Floyd is still kicking, Floyd is still running around in the boxing room.”
“I'll keep doing what I'm doing, but I might skip Ryan. I might skip Gervonta. [Davis]” Sean O’Malley concluded on “The MMA Hour.” “Go straight for the big dog.”
