Like Neyland Stadium itself, the Tennessee football team is a work in progress, with the departure of some talented players leaving a path for up-and-comers to make a positive impression and earn significant playing time. Therefore, the volunteer team has also made notable changes in important positions.
Key to that process will be this weekend's Orange & White football game, which wraps up spring practice and gives the Vols a chance to see some of the work being done on the field. Here's how and what to watch when the Big Orange returns to the field on Saturday.
Tennessee State Football Spring Game 2024 Schedule
when: Saturday, April 13th
time: 1pm Eastern Time
tv set: SEC Network+
secondary
The Vols played average, albeit inconsistent defense deep down the field a year ago, ranking 64th in overall defense and 66th in yards per completion allowed. All the starters in the backfield are out of the picture. In the NFL, it's the transfer portal that includes reserves.
Upcoming transfers include cornerback Jermod McCoy from Oregon State, Jalen McMurray from Temple and former MTSU safety Jacob Thomas. Boo Carter, a 2024 freshman, has received very positive reviews, but Ricky Gibson, Jordan Thomas, and Andre Turrentine are also options that could compete for a spot in the secondary, making him a big step back this year. It's a difficult position.
offensive line depth
Nico Iamareaba made a very good first impression as a bowl game quarterback, scoring three points and throwing a fourth against a great Iowa defense. But the Vols' intriguing new passer can't build on that success without competent protection, but questions still arise beyond the spring.
The offensive line has suffered a slew of injuries this preseason, playing without left and right guards, center Cooper Mays is limited, and there are up to eight blockers who won't play in the spring game. This gives fans a chance to see what depth the unit is working at.
Go back and run past questions
Tennessee led the SEC in rushing a year ago, but top backs Jabari Small and Jalen Wright are gone. Dylan Sampson, who played well in the bowl game, returns as the running back of the future, but head coach Josh Heupel is looking for more depth with additional options.
Cameron Seldon, a promising sophomore, is out this spring with a shoulder ailment, so attention will likely be on Khalifa Keith in addition to freshman Deshaun Bishop. No matter what happens, the Vols will likely look to the portal at the position, especially with veteran back Damian Martinez looking for a new team.
