Savannah Marshall looks to have a chance to avenge her loss in the near future.
Undefeated women’s super middleweight boxing champion Marshall (1-0), made her MMA debut in the main event of the 2024 PFL Europe 2 event at Utilita Arena in Newcastle, England, on Saturday, knocking out Mirella Vargas (1-3) in the first round.
Then Claressa Shields entered the cage for a friendly, playful showdown that could soon become very serious for both fighters. In 2022, Shields and Marshall will become the first female boxers to headline a major British show, with Shields becoming unanimous champion of the middleweight division.
The 29-year-old Shields, considered the greatest female boxer of all time, has also competed in mixed martial arts, returning in February with a split decision win over Kelsey DeSantis. She has a 2-1 record in three years as a professional MMA fighter under the PFL banner.
The win over Marshall marks the only loss of her boxing career. She was flat on her back early in her mixed martial arts debut on Saturday and had some issues to overcome, but she overcame them and celebrated afterwards with her training partner and teammate, UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall.
No date has been announced for the PFL MMA rematch between Marshall and Shields, but considering these are two of the most popular boxers in the world, such a booking could be a boon for the promotion.
