Rising 19-year-old unbeaten super flyweight prospect David Cardenas (6-0, 4 KOs) from San Antonio, Texas, will take on Steven Angeles Cruz in a Texas ring on Saturday.
This will be Cardenas' first six-round fight and is expected to be an exciting showcase for his talent.
Cardenas has quickly become a rising star in the San Antonio boxing world, and the man who helped him rise to prominence was his good friend, San Antonio Spurs power forward Keldon Johnson. The two met at a boxing gym and have since bonded, with Johnson attending Cardenas' matches whenever he comes to San Antonio.
“My friendship with Keldon is a huge source of motivation for me,” Cardenas said. “Having someone like him by my side, supporting me and believing in my potential has really boosted my confidence and drive to succeed.”
Cardenas is trained by veteran coach Rick Nunez, who played a key role in leading WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios to a world title, and Nunez is optimistic about Cardenas' future and sees potential.
“David competes in a lighter weight class where fighters often get world title opportunities early in their careers,” Nunez said. “With his talent and great work ethic, I think a world title fight will be within reach very soon, and we're working hard to make sure he's ready when that opportunity arises.”
Fighting in his home state of Texas, Cardenas is excited for the opportunity to build up his following and put on a show for them.
“There's nothing better than fighting in my hometown in front of my friends, family and fans,” Cardenas said. “San Antonio has always supported me and I'm grateful for the support. Every time I fight in my hometown it helps me feel more connected to the community and build a loyal fan base. I hope to follow in the footsteps of three world champions from San Antonio that I respect: Bam Rodriguez, Joshua Franco and Mario Barrios.”
The bout, presented by TMB Promotions at the Floresville, Texas Events Center, is expected to draw a large crowd to see the young prospect in action.
