SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KTRK) — For former world champion Mario Barrios, this is the opportunity of a lifetime.
Sources told ESPN's Mike Coppinger that the 29-year-old Barrios is being considered as a possible opponent to face boxing's only eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao, this fall for the vacant WBC 147-pound title.
Barrios, from San Antonio, Texas, is coming off a points decision win over Fabian Andres Maidana on May 4.
The San Antonio native owns a professional boxing record of 29 wins (18 of which were by knockout) and just two losses.
The fight against Barrios marks a three-year hiatus for the boxing legend, whose last professional bout was on Aug. 21, 2021, when he lost a unanimous decision to Yordenis Ugas, who held the WBA welterweight belt at the time.
ABC13 Sports will take a look at the possibility of a Barrios vs. Pacquiao fight.
Age-wise, Barrios has been blessed with the fountain of youth, but “Pac-Man” is now 45 and coming out of retirement again. As a fighter, Pacquiao has more fights than Barrios with 72 to Barrios's 31. Barrios also has an orthodox stance while Pacquiao is a southpaw.
Notably, both fighters will face the same opponent, former WBC and WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman, whom Barrios lost to on Feb. 5, 2022, while Pacquiao defeated Thurman by split decision on July 20, 2019.
All things considered, the Texas native is happy to go head-to-head with the boxing legend in the biggest fight of his career.
