2024 NC WAVE Sprint to the long course
This past weekend, the New Wave Swim Team held this year's WAVE Sprint into Long Course Meet at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, North Carolina. The two-day competition saw all 50s and 100s compete in all four strokes in each age group (10s and U's, 11-12s, 13s-14s, 15s and O's). The meet featured up-and-coming swimmers from host teams New Wave, Waves of Wilmington (WOW) and the Raleigh Swimming Association, as well as elite athletes from North Carolina State University and Duke University.
The NC State 15&O men's team wreaked havoc at the Triangle Aquatic Center, with three Wolfpack swimmers posting multiple top times.The highlight of the tournament came from my North Carolina State University teammates quintin mccarty and sam huberboth decided to go for a 50 free split during their individual 100 free event.
McCarty first touched the wall in 22.25 seconds, just shy of his season best of 21.94 at the U.S. Open in November 2023, which ranks him seventh in the nation this season. Huber ran a personal best of 22.79, bettering his May 2023 personal record of 23.12. In fact, Hoover matched exactly 22.79 for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Hoover now adds this cut to his 100 free cut (49.44) at the June 2023 U.S. Championships. The feat marks Huber's first career qualification for 50 Olympic free trials. He is currently matched by his teammate McCarty at 50/100 in both free trial cuts.
Other men's highlights
McCarty and Huber did not compete in the individual free event, but that was when they were 18 years old. jerry fox swept both NC State sprint free events. Fox won the 50 free (22.95) and 100 free (50.62), which weren't personal bests, but Fox had already qualified for the 50/100 free trial along with McCarty and Fox, 22.75. He holds the career top time of 49.55.Wow 18 years old Sean Setzer He finished in 23.17 seconds, just missing the 23-second mark.
26 years old Giovanni IzzoHe trains with Wolfpack Elite but represents Italy internationally, finishing second behind Fox in the 100 free, touching in with a score of 51.14. Although it was a little short of his personal record of 48.60 at WUG in August 2023, it was an improvement of 6/60 from the 51.74 he recorded at the TAC Titans LC Sprint Meet about two weeks ago. WOW's Setzer also placed third with a score of 52.50.
Third North Carolina State swimmer, 20 years old. stephen conrad, flexed his front sprint first and won the 50 fly in a personal best of 25.13. Then he flipped and swept the 50 back (26.72) and 100 back (56.80). Conrad already has an Olympic qualifying 100 back best time of 55.67 at the 2023 U.S. Championships.
Another NCAA team representative, Duke, 19 years old jack smith, won the boys 15&O 100 breast in a season best 1:05.15. The 18-year-old Setzer was once again a close second with a time of 1:05.44, 0.29 seconds behind. Smith's career best was a 1:03.52 at the Speedo Junior Nationals in June 2023. His Olympic qualifying time cut was 1:02.19. WOW's Setzer finished the weekend in first place in the men's 50 meters with a score of 29.53, unofficially ranking him 28th among U.S. 17- to 18-year-old swimmers this season.
Jump to boys 13-14 tournament, 14 years old parker van orst New Wave members won six event titles over the weekend. He recorded his four personal bests in the 50 breast (31.43), 50 free (26.91), the 100 fly he dropped a full 2 seconds (1:02.15), and the 100 free he dropped 3.2 seconds. A significant reduction was recorded (57.56). His two other event wins were his 100 breast (1:06.40) and his 50 fly (28.22), both by just a tenth of his time.
14 year old new wave cody watts He finished second to teammate Parker Van Orst in the 100 free (58.50), 100 fly (1:03.72) and 50 free (27.08). Watts was able to reverse his only two tournament losses to his teammate Van Orst in the 50 back (30.15 seconds) and 100 back (1:04.09). Watts won the 50 back by 0.08 seconds over Van Orst. Meanwhile, Watts beat 14-year-old Lowry by more than 1.5 seconds in the 100 back. carter wooten (1:05.52) and van Orst (1:07.20). Watts and Van Orst also competed in the 50-back race, ranking 18th and 20th, respectively, among U.S. 13- to 14-year-old boys this season.
Looking back at the men's 15&O chest times, 14-year-old Van Orst was second behind 18-year-old Setzer (29.53) in the 50 chest (31.43) and third in the 100 chest (1:06.40). It should be. Setzer (1:05.44) and 19-year-old Smith (1:05.15). Re-cIn the U.S. men's 13-14 season rankings, Van Orst currently ranks sixth in the 50 breast, but both his 2023 personal best of 1:06.13 and last weekend's 1:06.40 currently rank him third. . A 51-year-old swimmer from USSMS took second place in the men's 50 chest. david danson, he hit 32.00, just three-tenths of his personal best set in July 2023 of 31.70. Danson finished sixth in Cary with a time of 1:12.96, 0.46 seconds off her career best 1:12.50 in the 100 breast in July 2023. According to the 2023 USSMS Men's 50-54 Age Rankings Database, Danson ranked No. 2 in the nation for career bests in both the 50 breast and 100 breast.
female highlights
32 years old kimberly lewis New Wave athletes dominated the women's chest events, winning the 50 chest by 0.27 seconds (31.81 seconds) and the 100 chest in 1:12.35. Her career best of 1:10.63 was set at the ESSZ Sectional Series in March. Her qualifying time for the U.S. women's Olympic team was 1 minute 10.29 seconds.
Northside Elite 18 years old Maddie Joy In the 50 meter sprint, he won both the 50 fly (30.30 seconds) and 50 back (31.11 seconds).Same race, amazing 15 year old Kate Selens She placed second to Joy in the 50 fly (30.97 points) and 50 back (32.31 points).
Joy also competed in the women's 15&O 100 fly, finishing third (1:07.79) behind her 18-year-old Duke teammate. Molly Donlan (1:01.93) 20 years old Martina Peroni (1:01.31). Peroni's personal best of 1:00.79 is since the US Open in December 2022, while Donlan's slightly faster personal best of 1:00.59 was set at the Speedo Sectionals Series in March 2023. Her Olympic qualifying time for the women's 100 fly was 1:00.19.
Another Duke University swimmer, 18 years old Ali Fafhad two wins in the 100 free (57.01) and 100 back (1:01.55), both with modest time gains. He was 20 years old at North Carolina State University in the 100 Bucks. Cassandra Moses (1:07.19) and Northside Elite’s Joy (1:09.57) rounded out the top three.
However, in the 100 free, Moses and Donlan tied for second with the same time of 57.79 seconds. Donlan cut 0.18 seconds off his entry, while Moses cut 0.14 seconds off. Moses then won the women's 15&O 50 free in a time of 26.34 seconds, just 0.12 seconds off her entry record of 26.22 seconds.
Other 14&U Multi-Event Winners
12 years old slater spencer WOW athletes won all eight individual events and all four strokes in both the 50s and 100s, all in the best shape of their lives. Six of this season's event wins have come in the top 30 nationally in boys 11-12, including seventh place in the 50 back. His 32.31 PB just put him in the top 100 of all time in the top 100 American boys 11-12 year old grades.

hudson chapel The New Wave athlete dominated the men's 10&U events with five wins in the 100 breast (1:38.59), 50 fly (38.68), 100 free (1:19.44), 50 breast (46.27), and 50 free (34.35).
