SALT LAKE CITY — International Olympic Committee (IOC) officials say Salt Lake City's bid for the 2034 Olympics should not depend on MLB and NHL stadium construction plans. IOC Olympic Games Secretary-General Christophe Dubi said building a $1 billion stadium should not be a condition of hosting the Games. “At no point should these venues be conditioned on participating in matches,” Duby said.
Jacqueline Barrett, IOC Director of Organizing Future Olympic Games, added: We have the right solutions for each sport and discipline and are always open to the future. ”
Barrett and other officials plan to travel to Salt Lake City next month to assess potential conditions at the venue. They have made it clear that consideration for a new stadium will take place in the future rather than during the current bid evaluation.
Salt Lake City successfully hosted the Olympics in 2001, and many of the venues are still in use, and Dubi said he is excited about the city's capabilities.
“Salt Lake City offers everything, including an existing venue and great expertise developed over time across Olympic sports,” Dubi said.
IOC officials emphasized that the city's bid for the Olympics should be separated from potential sites for new MLB and NHL stadiums.
