Lady Diamonds get first win of the season

HEBNER — The Sallisaw High School soccer team defeated a Heavener team Tuesday night at Harvey Stadium, earning two road district wins on the same night for the first time in the program's three-year history.
The Lady Diamonds defeated the Lady Wolves 1-0 for their first win of the season, and then the Black Diamonds rallied from a 3-1 halftime deficit to beat the Wolves 4-3.
In the girls game, the Lady Diamonds (1-7 overall, 1-4 in district play) scored their only goal of the tournament when Kyla Taylor tipped the ball past Heavener's goalie. Sallisaw women's goalie Joselyn Rivera made three saves on the night. In the men's game, the Black Diamonds (5-2, 3-1) got the first goal from Wes Rodriguez on an assist from Cesar Morales, but the Wolves scored three times in the first half. Leading 3-1.
Rodriguez scored a hat trick in the second half and was the winner with a breakthrough set up by an assist from Brian Caster.
Sallisaw boys goaltender Cameron Holmes made six saves, two of his best saves coming in the final three minutes of regulation when the Wolves were about to score the tying goal and force overtime. Sallisaw's soccer team is scheduled to return home tonight for a district game against Poteau at Perry F. Lattimore Stadium, with the girls game starting at 5 p.m. and the boys game starting around 7 p.m. The Lady Diamonds and the Diamonds then travel to face their district foes.Tuesday at Tulsa Cassia Hall, with the women's game at 5 p.m. and the men's game around 7 p.m.
