Ryan Garcia responded defiantly today to being banned by the World Boxing Council (WBC) on Thursday for making racist comments on social media.
Garcia hit back at the WBC, saying of X, “I'm OK, but when I'm sober, please don't try to work with me again.”
Ryan wants nothing to do with the WBC after cleaning up his act. The WBC failed and Ryan has no intention of working with them again.
I am permanently banned
Ryan suggests that the WBC's decision to ban him was permanent, not temporary, but even if they chose to reinstate him, he says he would never work with them again.
Kingery believes the organization is treating him differently than other fighters and that other fighters who have made similar comments have not been punished.
Ryan seems to feel that the WBC is joining the many others who have criticized him for racist comments and is further exposing him to further criticism. He is frustrated at being further punished and treated differently than others.
“WBC, so many others have made racist comments and they didn't ban me. I'm banned for life,” Ryan said of the WBC's ban.
“The problem is Devin [Haney] He made racist comments, and so did Tim Bradley and NADA, and you guys do nothing.”
Garcia's future
Given Ryan's popularity, his success is likely to continue even after his one-year suspension and the WBC ban won't have any impact. He has not been banned by the IBF, WBA or WBO, so Ryan would have a good chance if he decided to pursue a world title.
Ryan has already said publicly that he has no interest in winning a world title: he wants to compete in the biggest fights and doesn't want to focus on the belt, because unless you're a fighter without fans, the belt doesn't matter that much.
If Ryan was serious when he said he wasn't interested in a world title, then the WBC's banishment of him is a hollow gesture.
