Boxer Ryan Garcia has been arrested in California on felony criminal damage charges after allegedly damaging a Beverly Hills hotel.
Beverly Hills Police confirmed in a statement to People magazine that officers arrested Garcia, 25, on Saturday, June 8, after responding to a report of an “intoxicated individual” at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Wilshire Boulevard.
“During the investigation, the intoxicated individual was identified as Ryan Garcia,” Lt. Andrew Myers told People in a statement.
“Statements were obtained from hotel management which determined that Mr. Garcia was a registered guest at the hotel and had caused damage to guest rooms and hotel hallways,” Myers added.
Garcia was arrested after hotel management requested his arrest on suspicion of property damage and was transported to a local hospital for treatment, Myers said.
Video obtained by TMZ purportedly shows Garcia, who won the WBC interim lightweight title in 2021, being escorted out of the hotel in handcuffs and wearing a bicycle helmet covering his face.
The outlet previously reported that Garcia was involved in a separate incident at a hotel earlier this week, with authorities reportedly being called to check on him after a relative of his said he needed assistance.
Garcia's lawyer, Darin T. Chavez, said in a statement that the arrest comes at “an extremely difficult time for Mr. Ryan” following recent reports that Mr. Ryan's mother is in failing health.
Boxing fans have speculated that Garcia may have been diagnosed with breast cancer after a series of posts on Twitter earlier this week, in which she wrote, “Breast cancer is stupid.”
Ryan's lawyer continued, “First and foremost, we ask that you respect Ryan's privacy during this difficult time. Ryan has been public about his mental health struggles for many years and is currently under immense emotional strain. He needs the support and understanding of his fans and the public as he navigates these personal challenges.”
“We are working diligently to provide Ryan with the resources he needs,” Chavez added. “Our team is committed to ensuring he receives the appropriate support and care to address his current and long-term health conditions. We ask for your continued support and compassion at this time as Ryan focuses on his family and his health.”
The hotel, which offers rooms and suites that cost thousands of dollars a night, acknowledged the incident in a statement to PEOPLE, saying it was “fully cooperating with local authorities.”
“The health, safety and security of our guests is of the utmost importance and we continue to make every effort to ensure all our practices and standards are in line with rigorous safety and security standards,” a Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills spokesperson said.
