Ohio State football lost a longtime rival coach as spring practice began, with former running backs coach Tony Alford retiring to the University of Michigan. And Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day responded.
Day acknowledged that he learned of Alford's departure last week and said he would personally coach the team's running backs until a replacement is found, and said he would not rush the process.
“We are in the process of identifying a replacement,” Day said.
”[I’m] We are excited about the groups we have already identified and intend to be thorough in the process. I think the good news is that we're not in a situation where we have to make quick decisions based on recruitment or portals or whatever. ”
He added: “I wasn't sure until you told me, but right now my focus is on finding the right person.”
Ohio State is considered to have one of the best running back teams in college football this season. The team retained leading rusher Trevayon Henderson, who ran for 926 yards and 11 touchdowns a year ago, but also added the former Ole Miss player for a big transfer. He backed up Quinshon Judkins, who led the SEC in rushing the past two seasons.
“I think this is the best running back room in the country right now. I think it's an exciting job and the candidates are great,” Day said.
