PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca says one Rutgers football player looked better than advertised. Daimare Miller, who will be added to Rutgers' offense through the transfer portal, could be the playmaker the Scarlet Knights desperately need.
Miller joined Rutgers in December through the transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining. Last season in FCS, he led Monmouth with 90 catches, 1,295 yards and nine touchdowns. He had an impressive performance in the season opener against FAU with 10 catches for 78 yards.
Miller received offers from the portal from UConn, FAU, Pittsburgh and Texas Tech, among others. After the second spring practice on Thursday, Ciarrocca was asked about Miller.
The coach, who is known for carefully parsing and then re-parsing his words, offered an encouraging perspective on where Miller has been.
“It's a little early to know exactly what he's going to bring to the table, but when we saw his film at Monmouth, we really liked his skill set,” Ciarrocca said. .
“And in the first two practices, he's probably… maybe a little bit better than I thought on film. I'm really excited to be working with him. He's excellent. He's a great young man. He's worked really hard since he's been here, he's really committed to the program, and you can tell the other players really like him.”
Miller isn't the only rookie veteran expected to make his debut at Rutgers this spring.
Wide receiver Naseem Brantley, added in last year's transfer portal, was cleared by the NCAA in January to participate in spring practice. Brantley and Miller, also in the FCS ranks, give Rutgers two veteran targets who can improve the passing game.
