A long-time member of a Maidenhead martial arts school has been crowned British champion in the arnis competition.
Roshan Singh Bains, 19, trains at the Combat Academy School of Martial Arts, which has branches in Maidenhead and Windsor, and recently won the lightweight division at the World Sport Arnis British Championships. won the title.
Arnis, also known as escrima or kali, is from the Philippines and emphasizes the deft use of sticks, padded sticks, and padded knives in full contact combat.
Roshan's achievement came after he won a gold medal in the double stick category and a silver medal in the single stick category.
He started participating in the sport just over 10 years ago in 2013 with Combat Academy UK and has been a dedicated and active member under Senior Master Instructor Ian Goldie since the age of seven.
The academy is now in its 35th year and Roshan is one of its recent success stories and it is hoped that his achievements will help promote the sport and further develop sport in Thames Valley.
His impressive recent performances in both the double-stick and single-stick categories of the sport have not only made him British Champion, but also secured him a place in the British team for the World Championships in September. There is a possibility.

For Roshan, it has been a journey of discipline and growth in the sport. A black belt holder in Japanese jiu-jitsu and kickboxing, as well as a British Under-18 Kickboxing Champion, Roshan has dabbled in a variety of martial arts and has shown that he can master them all.
He also studies Japanese Jiu Jitsu, Silat, Panantukan, Eskrima, Shasta Vidya, and Kickboxing.
He has also been mentored by some of the best leaders in their fields, including Guro Dan Inosanto, a close friend and student of Bruce Lee, and Guro Bob Breen, revered as the “Godfather” of Jeet Kune Do in Europe.
