SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Saturday night was the biggest fundraiser of the year for Rock Steady Boxing Gyms in Elkhart and South Bend.
They raised more than $20,000 for a non-contact boxing-inspired fitness program designed for people battling Parkinson's disease.
The program began in Indianapolis in 2006 and has grown to 816 gyms around the world, including 70 fighters training three days a week at two gyms in Michiana.
This workout came to town in 2016 and has grown by leaps and bounds from its original three fighters.
They believe exercise is the best medicine for the 1.5 million people nationwide diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases.
“Exercise is as important as medication in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. So, to fight Parkinson's disease, exercise must be part of your regular routine. Exercise improves your quality of life. “It's scientifically proven to help you bounce back, hit the ball less often, improve your balance, and improve agility.” Together with Mark, this will help people get involved in the community and do what they love. We can,” said keynote speaker Rock Steady President Ryan Cotton.
And no one should step into the ring in the fight against Parkinson's disease alone.
“It's an exercise you can do at home and benefit from the support of others in the same boat, and seeing it work in the gym is just magical.” Michiana to Phil Miller kind program.
