Robson Conceição, perhaps the greatest Brazilian boxer of all time, won a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and currently holds the WBC junior lightweight title. A controversial decision overshadowed his victory over Oshaquie Foster on July 6, but that hasn't dampened his passion for earning respect for his country through boxing.
After three previous unsuccessful attempts, Conceição (19-2-1, 9 KOs) achieved a lifelong dream of becoming a titleholder just weeks before Brazil aims for further success at the 2024 Olympic Games.
“I am very proud of my performance and I believe I did enough to win the match,” the 35-year-old Conceição said through an interpreter. “I understand that some will disagree with the result but the judges' decision was fair. I respect everyone's opinion but I am focused on the future and the next stage of my career.”
Brazilian boxing is buoyed by recent Olympic success, including Conceição's win in Rio, and Beatriz Ferreira, the current IBF women's lightweight titleholder, is the favorite to win the same weight class in Paris. Brazil has historically been known for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and UFC mixed martial arts champions, and is currently producing boxing contenders such as recent title winner Patrick Teixeira, along with Conceição and Ferreira.
Conceição aims to raise awareness of boxing in Brazil and inspire the next generation of Brazilian boxers.
“Boxing in Brazil is getting more attention,” Conceição said. “World titles and Olympic medals are testament to the talent we have here. With more interest from young people and better training conditions, I think boxing in Brazil has a bright future.”
Conceição is eager to take on a leadership role in Brazilian boxing and inspire future generations as the 2024 Paris Games approach.
“My plans include using my platform to promote boxing and inspire young athletes,” Conceição said. “I want to support social and educational projects that encourage sport and healthy living. In addition, I will proudly defend my titles and continue to represent Brazil on the world stage.”
