The former Australian middleweight champion defied the odds by taking on Marvin Vettori in a tough bout. To get another shot at middleweight gold, Whittaker was scheduled to face South African newcomer Dricus du Plessis at UFC 290 during international fight week. To return to title contention, Whittaker scored an impressive three-round unanimous decision victory over top middleweight and former title challenger Paulo Costa at UFC 298 in February. Whittaker was scheduled to fight unbeaten UFC superstar Khamzat Chimaev at UFC: Saudi Arabia on June 22, but Chimaev was forced to withdraw from the main event due to severe food poisoning, according to UFC president Dana White.
He will now face Ikram Aliskerov, a highly talented and dangerous Russian middleweight fighter whose only MMA loss was to Chimaev in a regional tournament prior to the UFC.
