Reigning Olympic gold medalist Asing Mu's hopes were dashed with a shocking fall in the women's 800-meter final at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials at Hayward Field on Friday.
That resulted in three new women competing, with defending U.S. champion Nia Akins winning in 1:57.36. Mu did not compete in the 2023 U.S. Outdoor Championships because she qualified for the world championships in the 800 meters.
Allie Wilson took second in 1:58.32, and Stanford's Juliet Whitaker took third in 1:58.45, both earning spots on the U.S. team.
Mu was set to win gold at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and become the 800m champion at the 2022 World Championships, but he had fallen to third place at the world championships a year ago and was looking to exact revenge on the international stage.
On Friday, she was caught in the trap of the women.
The former Texas A&M University star's fall shocked the track and field world as she was just returning from a hamstring injury that had previously kept her from competing on the track.
