Frisco, Texas – A two-week competition with over 800 athletes The team's matches have concluded, marking the end of the U.S. Youth Soccer regional championships.
Since the second week of June, many of the nation's top teams spanning the 12-19 age group have been competing in USYS's long-standing event for a trip to Orlando, Florida, and a spot in the historic National Championships.
Games took place in Charleston and Barboursville, West Virginia; Tampa and Auburndale, Florida; Overland Park and Olathe, Kansas; and Honolulu, highlighting U.S. Youth Soccer's premier competition across three different time zones for thousands of spectators and those watching from afar.
(USYS Regional Championships: Eastern | Midwest | Southern | Far West)
Hawaii and New Jersey led the statewide association with five regional championships this summer, and one of the Aloha State's teams, Leahi Soccer Club 05/06G Premier, is ready for the challenge that the national tournament brings.
“I think it's really awesome to be in this position and compete at this level,” said Leahi's Laule'a a Mook San. “We're from a small island in Hawaii and nobody really cares about us, so to be able to represent the Far West Region in this big tournament is really awesome and it's such an honor for all of us to have this opportunity.”
Ah Mook Sun's teammate Zoe Maika'i echoed the sentiment. “This is our second time winning, we didn't make it to nationals the last time we won, so to have another opportunity to represent not only the Far West region but Hawaii as a small island, a small community, it's just amazing,” she said. “As a part of this team, it's just about going out there and playing and doing what you love. I'm honored to be able to show what I can do with my team on this big stage.”
Multiple teams also qualified for Orlando from Florida (4), Illinois (4), Kansas (3), South Texas (3), Southern California (2), Eastern New York (2), Eastern Pennsylvania (2), Maryland (2), Mississippi (2), Nevada (2), Ohio (2), Tennessee (2), Utah (2) and Wisconsin (2). State associations with one regional champion are Arkansas, Northern California, Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oregon, Western Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Teams are represented from 30 of the 54 USYS state associations.
