Quentin Mustey has always wanted to make the team.
Masutti, the San Jose Sharks' 26th overall pick in 2023, played in 53 games with the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL, scoring 43 goals and 102 points. Prior to that season, Masutti spent the majority of training camp with the Sharks, participated in some preseason games and signed an entry-level contract.
Masti caps off impressive summer with first Sharks signing
Like last year, because he is a CHL draft pick and under the age of 20, Masutti’s only options are to return to the OHL or make it to the NHL.
Speaking to media at development camp, the 18-year-old spoke about his lofty goals for training camp, his assessment of the San Jose Sharks' recent draft picks and his praise for the Sharks' NHL and development coaching staff.
Masti spoke about her goals and expectations for the camp:
My goal, both last year and even more so this year, is to make the team. Every camp, you want to make the team. So that's my goal here. Just trying to learn everything. Trying to learn how to be a Shark. That's my goal here and then to come back to the main camp.
Masti shared his thoughts on the second development camp: “It was a great experience.
It's just a little bit easier. I never had this experience before I got here. That was the case last year. I know a lot of the faces here, I'm starting to get to know the names. So it's just a little bit easier. Not that it's easier, but it's just a little bit easier mentally to be in the gym and what I do on the ice. It's just a little bit less stressful.
On Masti and first-round draft picks Macklin Celebrini and Sam Dickinson:
“More than anything, spending the last few days with them and playing against them and being around them, it just means they're great kids. They're fun to be around. Obviously, they're just phenomenal hockey players. Especially what Macklin's done this year.
Dickinson is a great player, I've played against him a lot. He's a great player on both ends. They're both special players. It was fun. I haven't been able to see it yet. [Celebrini] I can't expect much from him as he's on another team, but he's really good and seems like a fun player to watch.
On Masutti, Joe Thornton and the other coaches at the development camp:
“Any coach you play with, you want to listen. But it's a lot easier for these guys to take in information. They've been through it. Even the NHL, these are two of the best players to have played here. It's fun to watch them play and I'm still in awe of them.”
Especially being from Buffalo, it's big for me to see Ryan Miller and guys like that. I can always learn from anyone on the ice.
Musti, a Buffalo Sabres and Ryan Miller fan:
I had season tickets to Sabres games as a kid. In my opinion, he's one of the best goalies of all time. Especially being from the Buffalo area, maybe the best goalie of all time. So it's super cool to see him here. My parents were super excited to see him get the job here. It's cool to see him around.
“He's a great guy,” Masutti said of new San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Worsofsky.
I haven't seen much of him here. He was a great guy to me last year when he was here and taught me a lot while he was here in training camp and preseason. He was a great guy to me. I guess I haven't seen much of him this week. I'm looking forward to seeing him.
