Due to the International Olympic Committee's commitment to gender equality, the number of female athletes participating in the Olympic Games has steadily increased each year. At the 1900 Paris Games, the first time women competed in the Olympics, the proportion was just 2.2%, but has steadily risen to 48% at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
Sailing also followed suit, with equal participation for men and women in Tokyo, but men still had an advantage in medal chances in five events, women in four, and one mixed event. At the Paris 2024 Games, men and women will have equal participation and a chance to win medals.
Overall, the Paris sports program achieved full gender parity in 28 out of 32 sports, with medal distribution in 152 women's sports, 157 men's sports, and 20 mixed sports. .
