Get ready, Brooklyn! Professional soccer is coming to Coney Island this summer.
Brooklyn Football Club (Brooklyn FC) held a ribbon cutting ceremony on its new turf at Maimonides Park in Coney Island on Wednesday.
The club's professional women's team will begin playing in the United Soccer League in August 2024. The men's professional team is scheduled to begin competition in 2025, according to a news release.
“What we're trying to do here in Brooklyn is to build a transformational hub for U.S. soccer and develop soccer clubs in innovative ways,” said Matt Lisetta, CEO of North Six Group and Chairman of BKFC. We need to reconsider.''
“We think Brooklyn is the perfect place to do it right in our backyard. For us, this is a project that really needs to come together. We need to partner with the community. We need to join forces with people who identify with Brooklyn. “Small businesses, large corporations, hospitals, schools, we need to do this together,” he said.
The organization also owns Two Bridges FC, a youth soccer development nonprofit that provides free professional development and training.
Maimonides Park is also the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, the New York Mets' farm team.
