The spring postseason has arrived. Here's what local teams will face in the coming days as the high school playoff spots for soccer and lacrosse have been announced.
AHS boys lacrosse hosts Grand Junction on Tuesday.
Thanks to a strong late-season performance, the Aspen boys lacrosse team rallied to earn the No. 15 seed in Class 4A. They will host No. 18 Grand Junction in the first round. That game is scheduled for Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. on the AHS turf.
The Skiers finished the regular season with an overall record of 8 wins and 7 losses, advancing to the postseason with four straight wins. AHS won just 2-5 against Glenwood on April 11th. Grand Junction also has an overall record of 8 wins and 7 losses. The two teams did not meet in the regular season.
The winner of Aspen-GJ will face No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain in the second round on Friday.
Glenwood also advanced to the 4A field and earned the No. 21 seed. The Demons play at No. 12 Windsor on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The winner will advance to face No. 5 Telluride.
Erie is the No. 1 seed among 24 teams. Steamboat Springs is the No. 3 seed.
AHS girls lacrosse will be held Tuesday at Telluride.
Aspen women's lacrosse enters the postseason as the No. 10 seed in 4A. They will host No. 23 Telluride (4-9) in the first round. That game is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the AHS turf or after the AHS boys lacrosse playoff game.
The Skiers won four straight games to finish the regular season with an overall record of 10 wins and 5 losses, advancing to the playoffs.
Aspen and Telluride met in the season opener on March 8th. AHS won 17-5.
The winner of the rematch will advance to face No. 7 Green Mountain in the second round.
Roaring Fork comes in as the 11th seed. The Rams (9-5) will host No. 22 Rampart (5-10) in the first round Tuesday at 4 p.m. The winner will face No. 6 Northfield in the second round.
Meade is the No. 1 seed, followed by No. 2 Evergreen and No. 3 Battle Mountain.
Area soccer team builds state field
Roaring Fork girls soccer (8-4-3) is the No. 10 seed in the 3A field They will host No. 23 Longmont (9-6) in the first round. That game is scheduled for Thursday at Carbondale at 5 p.m.
Basalt (6-8-1) is the No. 20 seed and will play No. 13 Eagle Ridge Academy (7-7) in the first round. That game is scheduled for Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
The Longhorns clinched a postseason berth with a 1-1 tie against Vail Mountain on April 30 and a 2-1 win against Cole Ridge on May 2.
Aspen earned the No. 30 seed and slotted into the 32-team field. The Skiers (5-9-1) will face No. 3 Kent Denver (11-3-1) in the first round. That game is scheduled for Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Colorado Academy is the No. 1 seed and Jefferson Academy is the No. 2 seed. Delta is the No. 4 seed and Vail Mountain is the No. 11 seed. Cole Ridge is the No. 28 seed and will play No. 5 seed Stargate School in the first round.
Women's tennis wins one match
Following last weekend's regional competition, Aspen junior Greta Holton has qualified for this week's Class 3A state tennis tournament in Colorado Springs.
Holton, who played second in singles, finished second to Vail Christian's Juliette Studness at the regional tournament. Only two regional finalists from each flight will advance to state.
Holton will face Timnath junior Sarah Daniels in Thursday's first-round match at state. The final will be held on Saturday.
Holton won its only state qualifier between Aspen and Basalt this spring.
Baseball enters home stretch
Entering the final week of the regular season, Aspen baseball remains hopeful of qualifying for the regional league. He is 8-10-1 as a skier overall. They lost a pair to powerhouse Coleridge over the weekend.
Aspen is next scheduled to play at Basalt on Tuesday (4:30 p.m. first pitch). The AHS season concludes with home games against Grand Valley (Thursday) and Olathe (DH, Saturday).
Basalt (7-12) still ranks better than AHS in terms of RPI heading into this week despite an inferior record. The Longhorns host Aspen on Tuesday and finish their home games against Rifle (Wednesday) and Delta (DH on Saturday).
The regional field includes 32 teams and is based primarily on RPI and MaxPreps rankings. In terms of RPI, BHS was ranked 24th and Aspen ranked 36th as of Monday night.
Preparation at the track and field stadium
The regular season has effectively ended for area track and field teams as they await the final list of athletes who have qualified for the postseason. The state championship is scheduled to be held May 16-18 at Jefferson County Stadium in Denver. Several local athletes are expected to qualify and compete.
Women's golf focuses on local tournaments
The women's golf season concludes this week with several final tournaments. A regional tournament is then scheduled for Tuesday at Cat Tales Golf Course in Alamosa. Aspen's four-player team is aiming to qualify for the state championship, which will be held May 20-21 at the Old Course in Loveland. The Skiers were 3A state runners-up in 2023.
