NEWARK, Del. (CBS) — New Castle County Police are warning about theft of luxury cars. Criminals are installing tracking devices on people's cars parked in public places, following drivers to their homes and attempting to steal their cars at night.
On April 16, two people came forward to police saying they discovered a tracking device installed in their car. One of the victims lives in the Harmony Woods subdivision, and the other lives in a development near Smalley's Pond.
Police are seeing an increase in thefts of high-performance Mopar vehicles, including Dodge Chargers, Dodge Challengers, Dodge Hellcats, Dodge Durangos, and Jeep Trackhawk SRT and Scat Pack models.
“If this [device] Since it was in a public place, they would follow the vehicle to their home and come and steal the vehicle late in the evening during the week, whenever it was a convenient time slot for them.” said Senior Corporal Richard Chambers. This was announced by the New Castle County Police Department.
Police are asking car owners to be aware of their surroundings and contact detectives immediately.
“Please do not remove these from the car. If there is evidence here, please leave it to the detectives. We want to collect it,” Chambers said.
Some residents said they would keep a close eye on their vehicles.
“We will take whatever steps we deem necessary to protect our families and property,” said CD Long, a neighbor of one of the victims.
As for Mr. Long, he plans to keep a close eye on his driveway and his neighbor's driveway for any suspicious activity.
“I don't know many people who can go buy a new car for $60, $70, $80,000,” he says. “They need to take precautions.”
