PFL star Patrick “Pitbull” Freire is already scheduled to compete in a fight that will define the regular season this weekend, but he and his brother have their eyes set on an even bigger fight.
The legendary former Bellator champion and his brother, who held belts in two weight classes, are two of the most famous fighters never to set foot in the UFC. Patricio just defended his featherweight belt against Jeremy Stephens, and Patricio faces Bruno Miranda this Friday.
Patrick is currently focused on the Miranda fight, having traveled to Salt Lake City three weeks early to get acclimated to the altitude, but like his brother, who is calling for a Brazilian showdown with Jose Aldo on the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson undercard, he also has his eye on major boxing bouts.
Patrick Pitbull slams Jeremy Stephens vs Anthony Pettis boxing match
Both Pitbull brothers are known for their striking – Patricky even earned the nickname “King of KOs” during his time with Bellator – and both have won lightweight gold medals in the organization, and both want to try their hand at boxing at least once before retiring.
“I love the PFL show because I get to fight for PFL, Bellator and RIZIN. I love Japan and I love boxing,” he said in an exclusive interview with Bloody Elbow. “It's perfect. I've been in talks for a boxing match at Bellator for a while now.
“Conor McGregor put up an incredible fight against the GOAT of boxing. [Floyd Mayweather]”And the PFL can guarantee that this will happen. Francis Ngannou is one example. Anthony Pettis has fought… me vs. Anthony Pettis would be a perfect show.
“The same goes for Jeremy Stephens. I think he has good hands to fight in a boxing match. We train a lot, we train with the Olympic team fighters. [in Brazil] And we have good coaches who are training us for these matches.”
Patrick Pitbull insists his brother Patricio will fight Jose Aldo
After beating Stevens in Belfast in March, Patricio expressed concern that the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight on July 20 might be a little too soon.
But with the fight postponed and a new fighter needed on the undercard, he wants to face Jose Aldo on that date.
“That's a good idea,” he continued. “Patricio vs. Jose Aldo is a very good idea. Maybe one day we could fight on the same night.”
Patrick Pitbull has tapped his brother Patricio as coach for his latest PFL bout.
Before his fight against Miranda, which would decide his fate in the PFL Global Season, Pitbull went all out, first by moving his training camp to Salt Lake and then by hiring one of the greats in the sport, his brother Patricio, as one of his main coaches.
Head trainer Eric Albarracin noted that the two train together and that Patricio has pushed him not to cut corners in training. “We've been here three weeks and I haven't seen him in camp with his brother as his coach and sparring partner,” Albarracin said.
“Putting them together is probably the best idea. I've never seen them more focused. A coach or a sparring partner might slack off sometimes, but his brother won't let him slack off. His brother won't let him. That's what's great about these last three weeks. I've never seen Patrick more prepared.”
It was the first time the two have sparred together during camp, but Albarracin would not say which session won, other than to say he might post the footage on YouTube.
