South African junior bantamweight champion Phumelele “The Truth” Kafu has teamed up with trainer and manager Colin Nathan.
Cafu is ranked fourth by the IBF and third by the WBO.
“Yes, it’s true. I joined Nomakanjani. [Nathan’s nickname in South Africa]” said Cafu.
“Even before I turned professional, I always wanted him to coach me. And I want to become a world champion. I believe that with Colin by my side, that dream will come true.”
A beaming Nathan said: “There's no doubt he's the best fighter in the junior bantamweight division in South Africa. He's very young and talented, but I don't think he's in his prime yet. His promotional contract with his current promoter ends on June 15, which means it would be no problem to move him under the Boxing 5 promotions umbrella.”
“When Kafu approached me he made it very clear that he wanted to come to Johannesburg, train with me and be managed by my company. I met with Larry, one of the partners. [Wainstein]And so we had discussions about Cafu joining Boxing 5 and No Doubt Management. It really wasn't a thought. Giving a 25-year-old, IBF-ranked No. 4, a world title shot was the obvious plan.
“It will be interesting to see what happens after July 7 when Fernando Martinez and Kazuto Ioka will unify the IBF and WBO titles. I won't reveal anything, but I have something to hide.”
