Patrick Beverley's controversial list quickly came under fire.
The controversial Bucks guard revealed his top five “whitest black players” in the NBA on the latest episode of “The Pat Bev Podcast” with co-host Adam Ferrone, but has since faced backlash. There is.
Beverley named, in order, Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen, Pacers center Myles Turner, 76ers center Mo Bamba, Hornets forward Grant Williams and Pelicans guard CJ McCollum.
Bamba certainly wasn't happy about being included on the list.
“Okay, I have time today @patbevpod” Bamba Posted in X. “Am I in the top five, black or white, because I can properly express my feelings and how I see things? You're a smart person, do your research. I'm not a gangsta, but in Harlem I was born and raised. I came out of the blocks and out of the trenches. [sic]”
And Bamba wasn't finished.
“Secondly, sitting there cross-legged like that and asking a white co-host to publicly question my blackness is one of the reasons it's so hard to move culture forward. “There's one,” Bamba said. I wrote about it in a later post. Accompanied by a laughing emoji.
Beverley said he used Bamba because of his preference for shooting 3-pointers rather than playing inside and his “finesse game.”
Bamba wasn't the only one to take exception.
“listen [Damian Lillard] Before you talk about my name, let’s talk about me,” McCollum wrote in an Instagram comment on a video of Beverly’s comments.
Lillard is especially teammates with Beverley on the Bucks.
Beverly explained the reason for making the list public.
“Let's get right to it. People want to see it,” Beverly said. “We made the blackest, whitest guys. I'm reading the comments, and I like reading the comments. You guys should do the whitest, blackest five.”
He later explained that his list had “nothing to do with their basketball game,” but rather their “swag,” or lack thereof.
