P4P great Demetrious Johnson believes boxing is far more exciting than what's been going on in the world of mixed martial arts recently.
Over the past few months, boxing fans have been treated to a ton of high-profile matchups, from Francis Ngannou's sophomore appearance in the ring to the spectacular brawl between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney.
And of course, you can't talk about boxing without mentioning the 12-round fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.
Meanwhile in mixed martial arts, Conor McGregor is partying away just six weeks before his long-awaited return, Jon Jones is refusing to fight Tom Aspinall and Ronda Rousey is still reeling from a loss from a decade ago.
Speaking on his podcast “The Mightycast” with MMA Hour host Ariel Helwani, “Mighty Mouse” suggested there's a lot more to find intriguing in boxing than what the UFC and PFL have to offer.
“Right now I feel boxing is more interesting than mixed martial arts,” Johnson said. “There are times when mixed martial arts is at its peak, but right now it's just Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney. Then Francis Ngannou gets knocked out by Anthony Joshua, and then Tyson Fury vs…. [Oleksandr] Usyk beat him [undisputed] “I was up against the heavyweight champion. It was amazing from the first round to the 12th round. It was nail-biting.”
“Now we are sitting here waiting…There have been some events in ONE Championship, like Cade Ruotolo making his MMA debut, but I think the story we are waiting for in MMA is Islam. [Makhachev] I'm going to challenge Dustin Poirier.”
Demetrious Johnson isn't wrong, but there's still a lot to be excited about in MMA.
Demetrious Johnson has a point, but that's not to say UFC hasn't put out anything exciting in recent months. It's only been six weeks since the promotion's landmark event in Las Vegas, where Max Holloway scored a buzzer-beater knockout of Justin Gaethje and Alex Pereira defeated Jamahal Hill with a stunning finish.
UFC will make its Saudi Arabia debut in June with the return of unbeaten Chechen monster Khamzat Chimaev and a welterweight showdown between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler at UFC 303, which has already broken the promotion's highest attendance record in history, according to Dana White.
