How does an under-the-radar high school running back end up competing for playing time with the Oregon Ducks, the team with the fourth-best chance of winning the national championship in 2024?
Introducing Oregon State football transfer Jay Harris.
Harris was an all-state running back and cornerback for his high school team, Timberland (Missouri) High School, in 2022, but never received an offer from a Division I school. He arrived at Northwest Missouri State in 2023, where he ran for 1,1433 yards and scored 14 touchdowns. Despite his success, there were still questions about Harris' ability to adapt to the physical competition of Power Five football, especially the Big Ten. meeting.
Harris understands the difference between these two levels of college football.
“These guys are big, strong and fast,” Harris said during Oregon football's spring practice. “We're coming here and competing more and growing every day with them.” I adapted pretty well. ”
Harris also caught the attention of Oregon coach Dan Lanning during spring training.
“We still have to work on the details. We're learning what to do consistently,” Coach Lanning said. “But he had a solid practice.”
The 2024 spring game gave Harris an opportunity to showcase his talent. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound running back had 52 yards on 11 carries and a 24-yard touchdown reception. His performance helps solidify his role in a crowded running back game that includes Jordan James, Jaden Rimmer and Noah Whittington.
Each has a role to play, but Harris brings size and power to the position.
“He's a big, physical guy,” said fellow running back James. “He's tough to tackle. He's going to be tough to beat. He's going to be a player that helps us win games.”
No one said moving from D II to DI would be easy. Still, Harris has shown the desire and tools to make the jump. He may have been ignored and underrated along the way, but all signs point to a big year and a big turnout for this powerful Oregon running back.
