Ontario Hockey League team presidents have offered condolences to the family and friends of two people killed in a shooting in Oshawa over the weekend.
Oshawa Generals general manager and vice-president Roger Hunt said in a statement Monday that the team was saddened to learn of the deaths of Patrick Montgomery, 42, and Andrienna Montgomery, 42.
“Following the loss of these two lives, our immediate thoughts and prayers are with the families and children left behind,” Hunt said in a statement.
Hunt said Patrick Montgomery was a former left winger who played for the Generals from 1999 to 2002. Andrieana was an art and music teacher at Bowmanville High School.
Hunt said Patrick Montgomery played three seasons with the Generals before going on to play four years at Brock University, where he played for the Brantford Blast, Whitby Dunlops and Norwood Vipers after graduating.
“The Oshawa Generals and hockey community mourn the loss of these two lives and wish a speedy recovery to all those affected by this tragedy.”
According to Durham Regional Police, officers responded to the scene around 12.35pm on Saturday after reports of gunshots at a home near the intersection of Jane Avenue and Glen Forest Street.
Officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, who died on the way to the hospital.
Officers then learned about a vacation home on Glen Forest Road where they found a woman who had also been shot. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say a 30-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in both deaths.
The suspect is an acquaintance of the victims, but police said the incident is not related to domestic violence.
